Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Learning to Be Present Instead of Getting Lost in Your Thoughts
Sometimes your mind doesn't seem to slow down. You may find yourself replaying the past, worrying about what could happen next, or getting caught in patterns of overthinking, self-criticism, or emotional reactivity.
Mindfulness-based therapy incorporates evidence-informed mindfulness practices to help you become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and reactions without automatically being controlled by them.
The goal isn't to stop your thoughts or simply “relax.” Instead, mindfulness can help you develop greater awareness of what is happening in the present moment and create space to choose how you want to respond.
What Can Mindfulness-Based Therapy Help With?
Mindfulness-based approaches may be helpful for:
Anxiety and excessive worry
Stress and emotional overwhelm
Depression and negative thinking
Overthinking and rumination
Emotional reactivity
Burnout and chronic stress
Self-criticism
Difficulty staying present
Sleep difficulties related to racing thoughts
Coping with difficult life transitions
Mindfulness can also be particularly helpful for individuals who feel like they are constantly “on,” have difficulty slowing down, or struggle to disconnect from work and daily stress.
Goals of Mindfulness-Based Therapy
The goals are individualized to you, but may include:
Increasing awareness of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations
Recognizing unhelpful patterns before automatically reacting to them
Learning to respond rather than react
Reducing rumination and repetitive negative thinking
Developing greater emotional awareness and regulation
Increasing self-compassion and acceptance
Improving your ability to stay present
Developing practical skills you can use in everyday life
What Happens in Mindfulness-Based Therapy?
Mindfulness-based therapy may incorporate practices such as focused breathing, grounding exercises, meditation, mindful movement, body awareness, and present-moment awareness.
You may learn to notice thoughts and emotions without immediately judging them, pushing them away, or allowing them to dictate your response.
For example, instead of becoming caught in the thought:
“I can't handle this.”
you might learn to recognize:
“I'm noticing that I'm having the thought that I can't handle this.”
That small shift can create space between the thought and your response.
Mindfulness practices are adapted to your individual needs and can be incorporated into therapy in practical ways that fit your daily life.
Is Mindfulness-Based Therapy Right for You?
Mindfulness-based therapy may be a good fit if you often feel caught in overthinking, worry, stress, emotional reactivity, or difficulty staying present.
It may also be helpful if you want to develop greater awareness of your thoughts and emotions without feeling controlled by them.
At Blue Wave Counseling, mindfulness-based interventions may be incorporated into your individualized treatment plan and can be used alongside CBT, CPT, EMDR, or other therapeutic approaches when appropriate.
What Does the Research Say?
Mindfulness-based interventions have been studied extensively across a range of mental health concerns. Research supports their use for reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress, although the strength of evidence varies depending on the specific mindfulness intervention and the condition being treated.
Research also suggests that mindfulness practices can help improve emotional regulation, reduce repetitive negative thinking, and increase present-moment awareness.
Mindfulness is not simply about relaxation. It is a skill that can help you develop a different relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
You can't always control what thoughts show up. But you can learn how to relate to them differently.
