EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is an evidence-based trauma-focused therapy that can help you process distressing experiences that continue to affect your thoughts, emotions, body, or daily life.

EMDR is particularly well supported for trauma and PTSD, and may also be helpful when traumatic experiences contribute to anxiety, panic, grief, low self-worth, guilt, shame, or sleep difficulties.

What Is EMDR?

Sometimes an experience is over, but your mind and body continue to react as though you are still in it. You may experience intrusive memories, nightmares, anxiety, irritability, hypervigilance, avoidance, guilt, shame, or feel emotionally stuck.

EMDR is designed to help you process these experiences so they become less emotionally distressing and have less impact on your present life.

EMDR does not erase memories or make you forget what happened. Instead, the goal is to help you remember without reliving.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR is most strongly supported by research for trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It may also be helpful when distressing experiences contribute to:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • First responder and critical incident trauma

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Grief and traumatic loss

  • Nightmares and trauma-related sleep difficulties

  • Childhood or developmental trauma

  • Guilt, shame, and self-blame

  • Low self-worth related to traumatic experiences

Goals of EMDR

The goals of EMDR are individualized to each person, but may include:

  • Reducing the emotional intensity of traumatic memories

  • Decreasing intrusive memories, nightmares, and distressing images

  • Reducing anxiety, fear, and hypervigilance

  • Processing guilt, shame, and self-blame

  • Reducing physical reactions connected to traumatic memories

  • Developing healthier and more balanced beliefs about yourself

  • Increasing your sense of safety and control

  • Helping you move forward without the past continuing to control your present

What Happens in EMDR?

EMDR is a structured, individualized therapy. Your therapist will first learn about your experiences, identify treatment goals, and help you develop strategies for managing difficult emotions.

When you are ready, you will briefly focus on a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, alternating sounds, or taps. This process is intended to help the memory become less vivid and emotionally distressing.

You do not have to describe every detail of a traumatic experience or repeatedly tell the entire story. Treatment is paced according to your individual needs, readiness, and goals.

What Does the Research Say?

EMDR is one of the most extensively studied trauma-focused psychotherapies for PTSD. The 2023 VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline recommends EMDR, along with Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE), as individual trauma-focused psychotherapies for PTSD.

The VA National Center for PTSD reports that numerous randomized controlled trials support the effectiveness of EMDR for reducing PTSD symptoms. Research also shows reductions in depression symptoms and, for some individuals, loss of the PTSD diagnosis. A 2025 review found EMDR to be comparably effective to trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing PTSD symptoms.

The American Psychological Association recognizes EMDR as a treatment option for PTSD and describes it as a structured therapy involving attention to traumatic memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation.

Research continues to examine how EMDR works and the specific role of bilateral eye movements. While the effectiveness of EMDR as a trauma-focused treatment is well supported, researchers continue to study the mechanisms underlying its effects.

Is EMDR Right for You?

You do not have to have a formal PTSD diagnosis to explore trauma-focused therapy. If something from your past continues to affect how you feel, think, sleep, relate to others, or respond to situations today, EMDR may be an option worth considering.

At Blue Wave Counseling, EMDR is provided in a supportive and confidential environment, with treatment tailored to your individual experiences and goals.
